What is Presumption?

                       The Sin of Presumption

Our Text: Ps 19:13 Please do not lead me into presumptuous sin.

Presumption has its roots in; pride, self-will or arrogance. Dictionary defines presumption as arrogant, disrespectful and unduly confident. Presumption is seeded in the soil of familiarity and "familiarity breeds contempt". We need on the one hand to get close to the Father, but at the same time not presume on God's presence.

Case 1 - The Presumption of Moses
Ex 17:1-7 Moses presumed on his relationship with God. Moses had such favour with God, yet sinned through presumption.
Num 20:1 Familiarity was beginning to creep in v10; hear now ye rebels, we must fetch you water out of this rock? Ye rebels suggests over confidence, and we suggests he thought that he was doing the miracle. In vs 11 Moses struck the rock twice! The point is he was never told to strike the rock at all! It is important not to presume on past methods. God is speaking new things all the time, we must listen to Him and not just implement old plans from the past.

Case 2 - The Presumption of The Children of Israel
Num 14:39-45 The people presumed to go up to the top of the mountain, vs 41 Moses warned them - God is not with you, but they presumed to go up unto the hill.

Case 3 - The Presumption of the Foolish Virgins
Matt 25:1-13 The five wise virgins entered into a place with the Bridegroom that the foolish did not and it was all dependent on the oil. All virgins knew that extra oil was needed, but 5 presumed it would be ok. The presumptuous ones basically said when the time comes we will go to some of the radical Christians and we will take from them. The 5 foolish virgins without oil were not willing to pay the price for an intimate relationship. We have to pay the price for a greater anointing. The price has been paid for our redemption forever by the blood of Jesus, but to be a disciple will cost.

Discipleship - The Cost
A disciple is simply one who does the will of God. Many refuse to pay the price because they presume they can ride on the back of someone else's relationship. We have to work out our own salvation:
Matt 12:46-48 Jesus said having a relationship with Him, like a sister, brother or mother, depends on doing the will of God. Jesus said for whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother, (vs 50). James 4:13-16 Presumption plans for itself, but a disciple of Christ will determine to do God’s will. Heb 10:9 Let us follow the example of Jesus and lay down what we desire for God's plans.
